SC Telco Federal Credit Union Reality Fair

The South Carolina Telco Federal Credit Union gave seniors a glimpse of reality on January 18th. The Reality Fair, coordinated by the Credit Union, allowed seniors the chance to see if they could afford to pay their bills and other expenses. A survey was given to seniors prior to the event which asked them to choose a career. Based on their career choice, seniors were assigned a salary. Additionally, they were given a credit score, student loan debt and credit card debt. At the fair, seniors were asked to choose housing, automobile choices, and other necessities for life. The goal was to teach them how to live within their means. Mostly all the seniors succeeded.

Swofford Career Center offers classes in graphic design and video production. Landrum High School has a variety of fine arts classes including band, drama, chorus, strings, journalism, and art. If any of these classes appeal to you, be sure to sign up for one of them during the registration process.

USC Upstate Computer Science

Computer Science is a fast growing and in demand career for the 21st century. With the ever changing technology and the need for highly trained individuals with strong technical and mathematical skills, computer science is a natural choice for those who want pursue a career that will allow them to work with computers. Some career choices in this major include: software developer, system analyst, information technology specialist, web application developeer, and network analyst.

Dr. Sebastian VanDelden, an Associate Professor from USC Upstate's Computer Science major, presented information about computer science and demonstrated the role of computer science through technology and science in Mrs. Givins' science classes. USC Upstate is among the fastest growing universities in South Carolina. Each computer science class provides students access to "smart" classrooms that encompass research labs, multimedia capabilities, and well equipped computer labs.

Respiratory Care at Spartanburg Community College

Mr. Joel Livesay from Spartanburg Community College spoke to students today about careers in respiratory care.

Respiratory Care therapists evaluate, treat and care for patients with breathing problems or disorders. They assess a patient's need for respiratory care and administer therapy, while evaluating responses and modifying care. They work under the supervision of a physician. This career is in demand. Spartanburg Community College's program is a two-year Associate of Science degree program. The average salary is in the mid 50's. Gardner Webb/Limestone

Landrum students toured the campuses of Gardner Webb University and Limestone College. Gardner Webb is a private Christian college located in Boiling Springs, NC. Gardner Webb offers several majors including athletic training, sign language interpreation, education, and much more. The minimum grade point average for admission is a 2.5. SAT or ACT scores are required.

Limestone College is located in Gaffney, SC and is a private liberal arts college. Limestone offers majors in musical theatre, psychology and more. A grade point average of a 2.5 is required for admission and SAT/ACT scores are required for admission. SC state scholarships such as the LIFE and Palmetto Fellows are applicable at Limestone.

Converse College gave Landrum students a special treat on October 28th. More than 15 students toured the campus and were the given the opportunity to "sit in" on classes. Converse is a private, all female, liberal arts college located in Spartanburg, SC. Converse offers a plethora of majors. One of Converse's newest majors is nursing. This five year program enables students to study at Converse their first 3 years of school and then finish at Vanderbuilt University in Nashville their last 2 years. Staff Sgt. Joseph Wilson from the United States Marine Corps spoke to Mrs. McNeill's classes about careers in the Marine Corps and traveling abroad. His presentation included pictures from the various countries that he has visited through his service in the Marines. Some of the countries he discussed include Iraq, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, and Austrailia. Staff Sgt. Wilson discussed cultural customs in these countries. Representatives from the United States Navy spoke with students about the NAVY ROTC program. Navy ROTC scholarships pay for full tuition, text books, lab/incidental fees, uniforms, and include a living allowance of $250 per month (with an increase of $50 each academic year) and a summer training stipend. The four year scholarship is worth up to $180,000. To be eligible, you must be US citizen, at least 17 years of age by September 1st of your first college year and younger than 23 years of age on June 30th of that same year. You must be a high school graduate and be physically qualified. The minimum SAT Test Score requirements are 530 for Verbal and 520 for Math. The minimum ACT scores are a 22 English and 21 Math. An Admissions Rep from Converse College spoke with more than twenty students today about admissions requirements, majors, and financial aid. Some new things at Converse include a new musical theatre major and a five year Master's Degree in Nursing major. The Master's in Nursing program is in a partnership with Vanderbuilt University. Upon graduating, students will earn a Master's degree from Vanderbuilt University. Converse has added a scholarship for students with a 2.75 and 900 SAT or 19 ACT worth $9,000. One of the most important things you can do is visit the college campus and see if it is the right fit for you. Freshman Orientation is approaching. Orientation gives 8th grade students planning to attend Landrum High School a glimpse of what to expect in the 9th grade. 2 Year Colleges

Two year institutions offer certificates in a variety of professions and Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. A certificate in a program is not a degree. This type of program typically takes less than a year and allows you to work in a particular type of job field such as a dental assistant or welder. An Associate of Arts degree is a general studies program that you can transfer to a four year institution. An Associate of Science degree is a specialized program that enables you to go directly into the work force upon graduation. Some of the fastest growing occupations require a two year degree. The ASSET or Compass test are required for placement.

There's a major difference between a job and a career. When you think of having a job, you view it as a chore, or something that you must do to earn money. A career is viewed as a life long endeavor. You may not work at the same organization your entire working life span, but you will do the same type of work. When you have a career you are more concerned about networking with colleagues or moving up the ladder. When you hold a job, your main priority is earning a paycheck and to perform the tasks required of you. Your career should not just be a job to you - it should be what you are passionate about, what you enjoy doing. The earnings should be secondary. If you enjoy your career, you'll do it well.

IGP's in Progress

The IGP (individual graduation plan) is a plan that is established by the student, parent and Guidance Counselor. At the meeting, the student's educational plans, career goals and other pertinent information are discussed. Students in tenth grade declare a major. Registration cards are reviewed and students choose courses that they plan to take while in high school. Every student at Landrum High School has an IGP meeting. All parents are encouraged to attend. She stressed the importance of taking rigorous math classes in high school as this is good preparation for a major in business in college. USC Upstate College of Business & Economics

If you're interested in majoring in business, then you should check out USC Upstate's major in business administration. The George Dean Johnson, Jr., USC Upstate's College of Business & Economics, also known as "The George," is located in downtown Spartanburg. This location allows students to have access to businesses in the Spartanburg community. It is the only business program between Charlotte and Clemson to have earned accreditation from the AACSB International - the Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business. Only one third of U.S. business programs have completed the process for this accreditation. The College of Business & Economics offers a degree in Business Administration. Mr. Goff told students that they need to know who they are before they can decide what they will do for a career. He added, that you need to "have a mission" in life. Mr. Goff's inspirational presentation focused on the relevance of setting a realistic goal, staying focused, and achieving that goal.

Dr. Julie Whitaker, from Guest Chiropractic Clinic, presented information about careers in Chiropractic medicine. Chiropractors treat patients with health problems in the musculoskeltal system. Most Chiroropractors focus on problems related to the spine. Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to help the patient recover. Chiropractors are required to have licensure in chiropractic medicine and a doctoral degree in chiropratic medicine. Sherman College in Spartanburg, SC offers a degree in chiropractic medicine. Landrum Students Tour Local Colleges

This week, Guidance sponsored field trips to Presbyterian College, Lander University, Spartanburg Methodist College and USC Upstate. Students met with Admissions Counselors and toured the campuses. More than sixty students attended. Presbyterian College is a four year private institution situated in Clinton, SC. Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC) is a private two year college located in Spartanburg. Students with a cumulative 3.0 g.p.a. can receive free tuition at SMC. Lander University and USC Upstate are both public four year universities. Lander is located in Greenwood and USC Upstate is located in Spartanburg. All Landrum freshman have the opportunity to participate in Swofford Career Center's Challenge Course. This fun-filled day teaches freshman to work together as a team. For a third year in a row, Mrs. Kristi Doty, Human Resources Director for CH2MHill, presented information about interviewing. Mrs. Doty't tips are: use a professional email address, make sure your resume has no spelling errors, do research on the company before you interview, dress appropriately, arrive early for the interview, ask follow up questions at the interview, and write a follow up thank you to the person(s) that interviewed you. She says it's important to make sure you stand out above the rest. You should take the initiative and show a strong interest in the job.

Machine tool technology will help you learn blue print reading, computer aided drafting, computer numerical control, and how to use precision measuring equipment. You can get a head start by signing up to take classes at Swofford in machine tool technology. Some of these courses count as college credit from SCC and at no cost! BMW employs over 6000 people in the Upstate. BMW offers a plethora of careers including welding, mechanical engineering, human resources, accounting, and assembly line work.

Dr. Victor Prieto, Professor of Linguistics at North Greenville University, spoke to foreign language classes about the importance of learning a foreign language. Dr. Prieto showed examples of occupations that you can have with a degree in a foreign language. He also pointed out job advertisements specifically asking for a bilingual applicant. For example, Dr. Prieto showed a job advertisement for Michelin that asked for the applicant to be proficient in French and English. Many employers are seeking employees that are proficient in another language. Dr. Prieto discussed the importance of Americans learning Spanish. Students that are planning to attend a four year university or college need to take a minimum of two units of the same foreign language. However, some institutions are requiring three units.

Game Warden

Mr. David Fox, a South Carolina Game Warden, spoke to forty-five students about his profession. Game Wardens ensure that hunting and fishing regulations are being followed. They patrol assigned areas to prevent fishing and gaming violations. Mr. Fox stated that on minimum a two-year college degree is required for this profession. However, he said, that a four year college degree is preferred. Some Game Wardens major in criminal justice, biology, marine biology, and/or forestry. The average salary range is $30,000 to $50,000. Due to popular demand, Mr. Fox will be back at Landrum in October to discuss his profession with another group of students.

A Parent Registration Dinner will be held for incoming freshman and their parents/guardians on August 3rd from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to obtain their schedule, meet with school staff, and tour the campus. Parents/guardians will need to complete registration paperwork and pay school fees. Proof of residency is required for all incoming freshman. The following can be used as proof of residency: tax receipt, rental receipt verified, deed to property, lease agreement or realtor contract. A spagetti dinner will be served. Merci Bouchon Restaurant

Students in Mrs. Baker's advanced French courses embarked on a cultural field trip to Bouchon restaurant, located in Asheville, NC. The field trip gave them the opportunity to practice what they have learned in class by ordering items off the menu in French and speaking in French with the wait staff.

French is the fourth most spoken language in the world. To attend a four year college, a student must take a minimum of two years of the same foreign language. Landrum HS offers Spanish and French classes.

AP Classes

Students who were enrolled in AP courses this year are currently taking AP Course Exams. The AP (Advanced Placement) Program is designed to give students the opportunity to take a college-level course while in high school. AP courses are rigorous and students desiring to enroll in one should be academically strong in the subject area and be prepared for hours of study and hard work. This may sound intimidating, but the pay off is great.
Depending on the college's AP score requirement, a student can potentially earn college credit. The highest score a student can earn on an AP exam is a 5. Most college's require a minimum of 3 or higher, some require a 4. Students should check with the Admissions department of the college they are planning to attend to learn about AP score requirements.

As a Kindergarten teacher, you impact a child's life. You teach children to share, to take turns, to wait in line, and to work together. These simple rules help you shape your character. Kindergarten teachers help students learn the alphabet, learn how to begin to read and teach other important fundamentals that are the foundation for an education.

To become a Kindergarten teacher, you need a four year college degree in education, certification in the field and a love for children. The average starting salary is $33,000. Ms. Janice Smith,(pictured to the right) the hotel's Concierege, discussed her career and gave the students a tour of the hotel - including a close up look at the hotel's presidential suite where President Obama stayed. Students met with the managers of housekeeping, culinary, sales, and human resources.

Students explore WYFF Studio in Greenville, SC

Twenty-five sophomores participated in a career field trip to WYFF Studio in Greenville, SC. Mr. Jeff Lee, a Director for WYFF, led the tour and gave students a "behind the scenes" look at the daily operations of working in a news station. Students saw the news control room and studio that is used for live news casts. Mr. Lee allowed the students to see themselves on camera acting as meteorolgists and newscasters.

"It was a lot of fun. It would be cool to be a broadcast journalist. The experience really helped me see what the job will really be like," says student Mallori Inman.

Town of Tryon Job Opening at Harmon Field

Do you enjoy working outdoors? A summer internship is available at Harmon Field starting June 21st. The pay is $8 an hour at 30 hours per week. The position is only open to rising sophomores, rising juniors and rising seniors. Job responsibilities include assisting in facility preparation for special events, performing turf and field maintenance, and assisting in facility repairs and maintenance. It also includes jobs that allow people to explore the world safely. Pathways in this cluster include restaurant and food and beverage services, lodging, travel and tourism and recreation, amusements and attractions. Some jobs in this cluster include general managers, chefs, bakers, front desk clerks, concierges, travel agents, event planners, and museum docents. Not all jobs within this cluster require a college education. A high school diploma and on the job training or training at a vocational school is required. For management positions and museum curators, a four year college degree is required. The salary range varies depending on the type of job.

Freshman Orientation

To help rising freshman become familiar with Landrum High School, Freshman Orientation will be held on April 13th, 14th, and 15th. Campobello Gramiling students will attend April 13th and Landrum Middle School students will attend on the 14th and 15th. This half day event will allow students to receive information about Landrum policies, sports, clubs and graduation information. Students will learn tips for success from high school students. There will also be mini lessons held that will allow students to discover first hand what will be expected of them in their classes next year. Mechatronics 101

Mechatronics integrated technologies refers to the integration of electronics, information sciences, and mechanical/computer engineering fields. It is a technician training program. Students may choose to earn a certificate or associate of science degree at Spartanburg Community College. More than 24.9 billion dollars each year accounts for manufacturing jobs in the U.S. In South Carolina, there is a critical shortage of highly trained individuals seeking work in a manufacturing career. If you are skilled with your hands, can repair broken items, like operating different types of tools and enjoy building things, then this cluster may be for you. Typical jobs in the manufacturing cluster include electrial engineer, chemical engineer, industrial hygienist, metal worker, and welder.
